Our Unit, Training Ship Spokane, drills once at month
usually the third weekend of each month. We drill at the
Naval Operational Support Center or NOSC (formerly
called the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center)
located by Joe Albi Stadium and the Veterans
Administration Hospital at 5101 N. Assembly on the North
side of Spokane.

Currently our unit consists of about 15
Cadets.  "Drill" consists of Physical Training, Basic
Military Training, Marching, Color Guard, Ceremony and
general military knowledge and Protocol and is generally
taught from a syllabus course guide.

There are also many winter and summer trainings that
are available to attend which are quite fun as well as very
educational. There are many different trainings which
are available such as Security Force Training, SEABEE
Training, Small Boats Training, as well as an annual
"League Orientation" that is usually held in August at FT
Lewis in Tacoma WA which all new recruits must
complete before being able to advance in rank or attend
other trainings.

If you are interested in the US Navy League Cadet
Program or about Training Ship Spokane - please send

or TestYourLimits@comcast.net with your questions or
comments.

THE NAVY LEAGUE CADET CORPS (USNLCC)
is for young Americans between the ages of 10 to 13
years of age.  The NLCC is basically the same as the
NSCC except that NLCC Cadets wear different uniforms
and are restricted from flying aboard US Navy aircraft,
participating in long shipboard cruises and other
hazardous activities.  However, general training at NOSC
SPOKANE will almost always be the same as for
NSCC Cadets.

IF YOU HAVE A YOUNG ADULT BETWEEN THE AGES OF
13 and 17, the US NAVAL SEA CADETS is the
continuation program of the League Cadets and is more
intensive and more self motivated than the syllabus type
trainings the League Cadets receive.  If you would like
more information about the advanced program, you can
send an email to
FortSpokaneSeaCadets@yahoo.com or
you can check out the national website at
www.seacadets.org or the local Spokane Washington
Sea Cadets at
www.fortspokanebattalion.org

Sea Cadet organizations exist in most of the maritime
nations of the world.  Recognizing the value of these
organizations in educating youth in maritime matters, the
Department of the Navy requested the Navy League of
the United States to establish a similar program for
American youth. The Navy League agreed to do
so and formally established the Naval Sea Cadet Corps
(NSCC) and Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC) in 1958.

The basic objectives of both programs are:

(1) to help young Americans become
more patriotic and responsible citizens, and (2) to help
young Americans understand the role of the maritime
services in national defense and in maintaining
the economic viability of our nation.

On September 10, 1962, the NSCC was federally
incorporated by Congress under Public Law 87-655 as a
non-profit civilian education organization, a legal entity
separate from the Navy League. This law was later
amended to permit enrollment of young women in the
Corps. The objectives and purposes of the NSCC as in
this law (as amended) are: "...Through organization and
cooperation with the Department of the Navy, to
encourage and aid American youth to develop, train them
in seagoing skills, and to teach them patriotism, courage,
self-reliance and kindred virtues."

Today, the NSCC has formed partnerships with
organizations such as the Foundation for Teaching
Economics and the Flying Midshipman Association to
offer cadets broader opportunities in areas of leadership
and aviation.   The NSCC also took an active part in the
creation of the International Sea Cadet Association
(ISCA).   The ISCA is an association of Sea Cadet Corps'
from around the world, whose main objective is to
facilitate exchanges of cadets between member countries.

The US Navy and US Coast Guard officially support the
NSCC / NLCC for purposes of training.  The Navy League
of the United States (NLUS) is the official sponsor of the
NSCC / NLCC.  Local Navy League Councils sponsor
individual units or where there are no Navy League
Councils, other Patriotic Organizations usually
provide sponsorship. You can check out the Spokane
Council chapter at www.navyleaguespokane.org
